About HI~Arts

HI~Arts (Highlands & Islands Arts Ltd) is the arts and cultural development agency for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

We were established by Highlands and Islands Enterprise in 1990, and since 1994 we have also been funded by the Scottish Arts Council.  In 2007 we became a Foundation Client of the Scottish Arts Council.

Our Mission is:
'To enable the Highlands and Islands to be considered the most creatively exciting area of Scotland'

And our Aims are to:

  • Increase access to the arts and heritage in the Highlands and Islands, by developing innovative approaches, and promoting models of good practice, in audience development

  • Nurture artistic talent in the Highlands and Islands through: direct funding for artists and arts companies; providing opportunities for professional and creative development; supporting and developing networks.

  • Increase the economic impact of the arts and heritage by growing and supporting the infrastructure both for professional artists in all disciplines, and for voluntary groups, based in the Highlands and Islands

  • Increase the role of the arts and heritage in promoting the health and wellbeing of communities in the Highlands and Islands
We are managed by a voluntary independent Board of Directors.  We employ a number of both core and project staff.  We work in close partnership with a number of other companies which we have helped to create: the Highlands and Islands Theatre Network, Go Events, Booth Scotland, and Regional Screen Scotland. We also work closely with the different Local Councils in the Highlands and Islands, and with other national agencies such as Scottish Screen.

You can find detailed reports of all our activities and projects under the ‘Artforms’ and ‘Services’ tabs on this website.  We aim to provide accurate, practical and helpful information and guidance on all aspects of the arts in the Highlands and Islands.  We also deliver a number of services and projects which are intended to support the development and presentation of the arts and culture in our area.
