Northings

In 2002 HI~Arts launched ‘Northings’, probably the first regional online arts journal in the UK. We knew how hard it was for artists and arts organisations in the Highlands and Islands to get media coverage of their work, and we also saw the need to develop a team of skilled and experienced writers.

In the nine years since, Northings has built up an archive of hundreds of reviews, features, interviews, images and podcasts that cover the arts from Arran to Shetland and from Barra to Moray, and editor Kenny Mathieson has built up an extensive team of writers, some of who are gaining national recognition.

In November 2010 Northings graduated to having its own website which allows for a great deal more interaction in the way of blogs, posts and comments, and its first three months it attracted over 300 members.
